When it comes to shopping for an engagement ring there are so many options it can become a bit overwhelming. Not only do you have to consider the cut, carat, clarity, and color, you also have to decide what type of stone, what shape, what fitting or design. Then, to make things even more difficult, there’s the decision of where to buy the ring. Do you visit a national jewelry chain, shop online, or maybe visit the diamond district. You may want to consider researching each option individually but here’s an overview of places to buy an engagement ring.
National Jewelers
National brands often boast very large selections – which usually just make the decision process even more difficult – and a plethora of financing options. With these big brand stores, you may be able to get a great deal on an engagement ring but you’ll have to have the patience and resolve to sift through all the marketing ploys to really come out satisfied. These large chains do tend to get their diamonds at a lower price by buying in bulk but that usually doesn’t benefit the buyer after their large markups.
Private Jeweler
Private jewelers are great if you know exactly what you want or you are looking for full control and customization. You’re likely to enjoy better value with a private jeweler without the extra overhead of a storefront. Don’t expect a lot of designer rings though, you’ll likely have to have an idea of what you want upfront – although they may provide a bit more hand-holding than retail stores.
Buying Online
Purchasing an engagement ring online can be tricky. Here you’re most likely to get the lowest prices on the market but there’s a drawback. You’re basing your decision on an image rather being able to see it in person. Some online stores allow for returns or exchanges so you’ll want to verify that first. You can also read the official grading report to get a better idea of quality and clarity, however, that doesn’t always mean it will look as nice as you think. Seeing the stone in person is still the best way to judge the diamond.
Local Jewelers
Finally, there are the local jewelers. These are usually the safest bet and most reliable but they may not have as large of a selection as national jewelers. You’re likely to get a great price, have a nice selection of designer and custom rings but may not have as many finance options. Just like national jewelers, with local retailers, you can go in and see the rings in person, and get a better idea of what you want. Local jewelers tend to be a good starting point for most individuals looking to purchase an engagement ring.
